DAVIDSON – The Davidson College men's soccer team will open the 2023 season Thursday night when the High Point Panthers come to town for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
This will be the third straight season the Wildcats and Panthers will meet in both teams' season opener.
Davidson enters the 2023 campaign with a solid core from last year's team, including ten returning starters.
Among the players returning from last year are sophomore Denis Krioutchenkov who recently earned preseason all-conference honors after leading the A-10 in shots-on-goal and game-winning goals in 2022. Krioutchenkov was also selected to the Freshman All-America Second Team and earned A-10 Second Team All-Conference as well as All-Rookie honors.
The 'Cats not only return their top shot taker and goalscorer, but also Vincent Bennage who finished second on the team in both categories last year.
Davidson will also return a plethora of experience in the midfield and on the back line. Five players who each logged 1,200 or more minutes last year all come back to help bolster the Wildcat lineup. Trey Gardiner, Nicholas Cavallo, and Eamon Moylan all logged over 1,400 minutes defending last season, and all three will return to the pitch this season. Maddux Reece, Jack Brown and Alonzo Clarke will anchor the Wildcats' midfield after registering over 1,200 minutes of game action a year ago.
Between the pipes, senior Lou Liedtka will enter his first season as the projected starter for the Wildcats. The Wyncote, Pa., native took over starting goalkeeping duties for the last six games of the season and finished with a 4-2 record while allowing just five goals with 20 saves. Liedtka also notched three shutouts in the six games he started.
About the Panthers
High Point enters Alumni Stadium as the defending Big South Conference champion after it finished the 2022 season with an 11-5-5 overall record and a 5-0-3 mark in conference action. The Panthers also made some noise in the NCAA Tournament when they defeated UNC 2-0 in the first round before falling to then-ranked No. 5 Stanford in the second round.
The Panthers also return a strong core from last year led by their leading scorer, Noah Holmes. Holmes was an uber-efficient offensive threat for High Point as he scored 11 goals on 17 shots-on-goal and 29 total shots. His 11 goals ranked tied for 12th in the country and earned him First Team Big South and All-Region honors.
High Point also returns five of their top six players in minutes played from a year ago, highlighted by all-conference and all-region selections Finn McRobb and Jefferson Amaya, who was HPU's second leading scorer in 2022.
The Panthers did lose all-region goalkeeper Holden Trent to the MLS Draft, and all three keepers currently on the HPU roster have yet to see regular season action in a Panther uniform.
Up Next
Davidson will continue non-conference action with a trip to Campbell on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
