Rams Best 'Cats, 67-60

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Rhode Island Rams capitalized on a 25-11 second quarter to defeat the Davidson Wildcats, 67-60, in Atlantic 10 women's basketball action on Saturday night.

The Wildcats, who outscored Rhode Island 49-42 over three quarters of play, held Rhody to just three made field goals in the first 10 minutes to take a 13-7 lead after the first quarter.

In the defining second quarter, Adelaide Fuller sank a putback to put the 'Cats ahead by 10, 17-7, in what would be their largest lead of the day before the Rams combined for an 18-0 run to pull ahead 32-24 at the half. Over the course of the frame, Rhode Island shot 68 percent from the floor and hit three treys to stretch to its eight-point lead at the break.

While the Rams went up by 11 at the start of the second half, Fuller scored another four-straight for Davidson to push its deficit back to single digits, as the 'Cats trailed 37-30. From there, Elle Sutphin and Tomisin Adenupe hit timely shots at the free throw line that made it a three-point game, 41-38, with 3:30 to go in the third.

Rhode Island stretched its lead to 11 once again, with five minutes remaining in the game, before Sutphin, Adenupe and Suzi-Rose Deegan strung together a 6-0 Davidson run to make it 57-50. Later, while trailing 62-54, Mallorie Haines drained a corner three and Deegan completed another three-point play to pull the 'Cats within four, 64-60, with 20 seconds remaining. Ultimately, the comeback fell short as Rhody sank three free throws and secured the seven-point victory.

Overall, the Wildcats and Rams were knotted up with 35 rebounds apiece and 36 points in the paint each. Rhode Island's Madison Hattix-Covington dropped a game-high 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting, while Elle Sutphin scored a team-high 19 points.

Deegan (11), Fuller (10) and Adenupe (10) each reached double-figures in scoring, as Saturday's result marked just the second time this season in which Davidson has lost when four scorers reach double digits.
