Carey, Cochrane Lead 'Cats to Opening Day Win

2/11/2023 4:50:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Julianne Carey and Riley Cochrane scored five goals apiece to lead the Davidson lacrosse team to a 17-13 victory over High Point University on Saturday afternoon.

The win marks the third straight year in which the Wildcats have defeated the Panthers, and the second consecutive season where Davidson won its season opener over HPU.

The Panthers took the first punch of the game, running off with a 4-0 lead before senior captain Grace Fahey scored the first goal of the 2023 season at the 7:38-mark. Fahey later fed Erin Cooke a pass from inside the 8-meter for a catch and shoot play that cut the deficit to three, 5-2, before Cochrane notched back-to-back goals, including one at the buzzer, to pull within two of the Panthers at the end of the first.

Payton Cheedle got the 'Cats started in the second, starting a three-goal streak, with her first career goal in her first collegiate game. From there, Carey scored two in a row to give Davidson its first lead of the day, 7-6, with 7:25 remaining in the half.

After entering the break tied 8-8, Carey and Cochrane rattled off back-to-back scores to extend the Wildcats' lead to two, before HPU scored a 3-0 run of its own to take back the lead, 11-10, with 4:46 to go in the frame. Over the final stretch of the quarter, Carey once again tied the game at 11-all with a strike through the goalie's legs, and Caroline Moran recorded her first goal of the season to push Davidson ahead 12-11 with 15 minutes remaining.

Riley Redpath got on the board to start off the fourth quarter, before the Panthers made it a one-goal game again with nine minutes to play. Rookie Allie Hartnett connected on a free-position shot one minute later, for the first score of her collegiate career, and ultimately notched the game-winning goal as the 'Cats pulled ahead 14-12.

In the final seven minutes of work, Cochrane and Carey combined for three more goals and put the game out of reach as the Wildcats secured the 17-13 opening day win.

Carey ended the day with six points off five goals and one assist, while winning a game-high 10 draw controls. Cooke dished a team-best five assists, while Fahey and Hartnett added three assists apiece. High Point's Mena Loescher ended with nine points off five goals and four assists.

On the defensive end, Amanda Monahan stopped 11 shots while the 'Cats went 17-of-18 on clear attempts.
