CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Looking to knock off its second Atlantic Coast Conference foe in as many days, upset-minded Davidson took nationally-ranked North Carolina down to the wire before falling, 74-70, Sunday evening inside Carmichael Arena.
The setback is the first of 2023-24 for the Wildcats as they fall to 2-1 on the young season, while the Tar Heels move to 2-0.
Trailing 58-49 entering the fourth quarter, Davidson slowly started to chip away and eventually took its first lead of the night, 64-62, with consecutive treys from Charlise Dunn, capping an 8-0 streak. The two teams traded buckets over the next two minutes before Lexi Donarski hit a three giving the Heels a 70-66 lead with 2:30 to play.
North Carolina, unable to put the 'Cats away, missed four straight free throws in the closing seconds, but came away with a pair of offensive rebounds to all but secure the victory.
Davidson, which knocked off Wake Forest yesterday, got career-highs from Dunn (21) and Millie Prior (20) as the duo combined for 41 points and 16 rebounds. Dunn drilled five of the 'Cats' 10 3-pointers to go along with 8 rebounds, while Prior finished 8-of-10 from the floor and pulled down 8 boards of her own.
Coming off an 18-point effort in the win over the Demon Deacons, Elle Sutphin also added double figures with 17 points, including 4-of-5 from long range.
Deadlocked at 8-8, UNC took the lead for good with a 15-5 spurt to close the opening frame.
The 'Cats got to within six on separate occasions in the second quarter, including 32-26 following a Sutphin trey, but the Heels went to the half up, 34-26.
After Issy Morgan and Dunn drilled back-to-back triples to cut the deficit to five, 42-37, midway through the third, North Carolina responded with an 11-2 run to take its largest lead of the contest, 52-39.
Deja Kelly paced four Tar Heels in double digits with 18 points and 7 assists in 36 minutes of action.
