RICHMOND, Va. – The Davidson men's soccer team survived a missed penalty kick in the last minute and a half to knock off the VCU Rams on Saturday night. Denis Krioutchenkov's penalty kick goal in the 18th minute proved to be the difference.
Davidson found themselves in the driver seat early after Vincent Bennage was fouled hard in VCU's goalie box less than 20 minutes into the contest. Sophomore Denis Krioutchenkov stepped up to take the shot and converted on a low dribbler to the lower right corner. It was the Milwaukee native's fifth of the season.
That score stood until the Rams had some dangerous opportunities late in the game. With under 20 minutes to play, Maddux Reece was able to break up a one-on-one chance by the attacking Rams to clear away the chance. Then, in the 79th minute, Lou Liedtka came off his line to break up another VCU attack near the 6-yard line.
The key play in the game with only a minute and 14 seconds left on the game clock. The Rams were awarded a penalty kick after one of their players were fouled inside the top of the box. VCU's attempt fortunately missed the mark wide right to keep the shutout intact and seal the win for Davidson.
With the victory, the Wildcats earned their sixth shutout victory of the season and bumped their record to 8-2-1 and 4-1 in the A-10.
