Strong Start Leads to Win Over Duquesne

10/4/2023 11:01:00 PM | Men's Soccer

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson men's soccer team scored twice in the first 25 minutes to secure an Atlantic 10 victory over the Duquesne Dukes at Alumni Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Wildcats came out of the gates fast upon returning to their home turf. Davidson's offense pounded their way through the Duquesne back line to the tune of seven shots and a pair of goals in the opening 25 minutes of action. Vincent Bennage and Nico Quanbeck sent out attempts just in the first five, followed by a shot on goal and a shot off the crossbar from forward Denis Krioutchenkov minutes later.

In the 17th minute, Eamon Moylan found himself inside the center circle with space in front of him. After a few dribbles he found Vincent Bennage up ahead who weaved his way into the attacking third. He then left a touch inside the eighteen for Krioutchenkov who rifled a shot through a defender's legs and inside the far post to give the 'Cats an early lead.

Eight minutes later, the Wildcats were once again on the prowl. Nico Quanbeck received a short pass from Luke Bryant on the near side, who then sent a one-touch pass to Vincent Bennage. The Kenosha, Wisconsin native redirected the pass behind a Duquesne defender before turning on the jets all the way into the visitor's goal box. He then found Bryant, who was able to catch back up to the play, and barreled a shot off a Dukes' defender on a ricochet into the net.

The 'Cats took the two goal lead into the half.

In the 63rd minute, Davidson had a chance to take a three-goal lead when they were awarded a penalty kick. Bennage was unable to convert to leave the score at 2-0.

Down the stretch, things got interesting after the Dukes were awarded a PK in the 83rd minute. With the margin narrowed, Davidson almost immediately had an answer. Krioutchenkov had a shot redirected by the Duquesne goalkeeper on a diving save in the 84th minute.

Three cards were handed out in the final three minutes as play turned chippy. Duquesne has a last-second throw-in with under 30 seconds left deep in Davidson's defensive zone, but on the play prior, a Duquesne player received a straight red card after unsporting behavior. Once the dust settled, the Wildcats were able to thwart away the throw-in and run out the remaining ten seconds to hold on for the win.

With the win, Davidson moved to 7-2-1 on the year and are now 3-0-1 in A-10 play.
