DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson College men's soccer team is set for a crucial Atlantic 10 match at Massachusetts on Saturday which will feature the league's top defense going up against the conference's points leader and top scorer.
Last Time Out
The Wildcats come into Saturday's A-10 showdown riding a three-game win streak and have won five of their last six matches. Davidson most recently defeated Saint Joseph's in a 2-0 decision after goals from forwards Denis Krioutchenkov and Vincent Bennage. Midfielders Luke Bryant and Jack Brown were credited for assists.
'Cats in the Conference Standings
Davidson enters the weekend atop the Atlantic 10 standings with 15 conference points and a 5-1 mark in league play. They currently lead Saint Louis by two points with two games left to play while Loyola Chicago and VCU are tied for third with 11 conference points.
Among the Nation's Best
Another week, another shutout. The Wildcats continue to rank among the top teams in the country in crucial statistical categories. After their Atlantic 10-leading seventh shutout last weekend, Davidson moved to fourth in the country in both shutout percentage (58.3%) and save percentage (85.7%).
The 'Cats are also fifth in the country in team goals against average after allowing just 0.583 goals per game and have the 12th-best win-loss-tied percentage in DI at 9-2-1. They also have a +14 goal differential which ranks 19th in the nation.
For their recent efforts, the Wildcats were ranked #24 by TopDrawerSoccer.com and received votes in the United Soccer Coaches national poll this week. It was the first time that Davidson was ranked since early in the 2021 season.
Forwards on Fire
Davidson's dynamic striking duo, Denis Krioutchenkov and Vincent Bennage, have been one of the most productive front line pairings in the conference and appear to be peaking at the right time.
Over the last six games, Bennage and Krioutchenkov have accounted for 19 of Davidson's 41 total points (46.3%) and one or both forwards have recorded a goal in five straight games.
In the month of October alone (three games), Krioutchenkov has three goals and six points while Bennage has notched four points with a goal and two assists which accounts for 10 of Davidson's 16 points this month.
About the Minutemen
The key to Saturday's match will be how the conference's top defense will defend the Atlantic 10's top offensive threat. UMass's Alec Hughes leads the conference in almost every major offensive category including goals (11), points (23), shots on goal (32), and shots (66). Hughes' 11 goals is tied for the fifth most in Division I and his 23 points ranks tied for 11th in the nation.
Behind him, midfielder/forward Nick Zielonka ranks second in the A-10 in assists with eight. He also has four goals for a total of 16 points on the year. Hughes and Zielonka's 39 combined points are the most by two teammates in the A-10.
As a team, UMass' has scored 24 goals, the third most in the league, while they have allowed 17 goals by opponents. They also have sent out the second-most shots in the A-10 with 223 total for an average of just under 15 shots per game.
