Wildcat Swimmers Open Season at Queens Saturday
9/30/2022 2:11:00 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving, Swimming & Diving
The Davidson Wildcats are returning to the water.
Davidson's swimmers will compete for the first time this season on Saturday when they visit Queens at 11 a.m. in Charlotte.
"We've come to rely on this early contest to provide a really nice sense of where we start the season," said coach John Young. "The teams at Queens are formidable, and I'm excited to see the Wildcats test themselves against high-caliber competition. I'm also very eager to see the class of 2026 begin crafting their story."
The Wildcats return a talented and accomplished group, led by senior Shelby Stanley, the two-time Atlantic 10 Conference Performer of the Year.
Stanley won A-10 championships in the 100 fly, 200 fly and 200 IM last year, while also setting league records in the 100 fly (52.94) and 200 IM (1:57.89). She also owns the school record in the 200 fly from 2021 (1:57.82) and is part of four school-record relays.
Senior Abby Francis returns after earning A-10 bronze in the 100 free last year, and her name is beside Stanley's on the school-record 200 medley and 400 medley relays. Returners Martha Tripsa and Chalé Jacks joined the duo on the program record-setting 200 free relay a year ago.
Diver Annica Valmassei returns after winning A-10 gold in the 3-meter competition last season as a freshman (262.50).
For the Davidson men, sophomore Ben McClain returns after capturing A-10 gold in the 200 free (1:37.95) and bronze in the 100 free.
Juniors Ian Brann and Cael McLaren own school records set in 2021, Brann in the 50 free (20.15) and McLaren in the 100 breast (54.85). Both secured A-10 bronze last season and also swam on school-record relays in 2021, Brann in the 200 and 400 free relays and McLaren in the 200 medley.
