AMHERST, Mass. – Davidson lacrosse's postseason run came to an end in the Atlantic 10 semifinals against No. 13 UMass on Friday, as the Wildcats fell 11-8 to the league's regular season champion.
With the loss, the Wildcats end the season 13-5 overall after setting the program's single-season wins record.
Overall, UMass won 12 draws compared to Davidson's 11 while Amanda Monahan made 19 saves and faced 37 shots. Senior Lauren Arkell scored three points off two goals and one assist, totalling six points in the tournament, and sophomore Julianne Carey scored a team-high three goals. The 'Cats struck first from Garber Field after winning the opening draw, as Arkell found the back of the net after a 2-on-1 battle in front of the crease.
UMass responded to the early deficit quickly and scored its first goal less than a minute later before igniting into a six-goal tear to take a 6-1 lead with 10:28 remaining in the half.
After coming out of the break trailing 7-3, Davidson exchanged a pair of goals with UMass in the third quarter, including a free-position goal from the nation's leading free-position shooter, Fahey, and another weaving goal from Carey that pulled the 'Cats back within four, 9-5.
Although the 'Cats trailed 11-5 with 15 minutes remaining, Davidson had its strongest showing in the fourth quarter, winning three draw controls and outscoring UMass 3-0 to make it a three-goal game just as time expired.
