Early Setback Pushes Hawks Ahead of 'Cats

PHILADELPHIA -- The Davidson Wildcats outscored Saint Joseph's University 8-3 over the final 30 minutes of play on Friday afternoon, but a 9-1 first-half set back allowed the Hawks to secure the Atlantic 10 win, 12-9.
Junior attacker Grace Fahey got the 'Cats started early, and scored the first goal of the game just one minute into play, before SJU rattled off nine straight to build to a commanding 9-1 lead at halftime.
Davidson began its comeback in the third quarter, as Emma Johnson, Erin Cooke and Fahey scored three straight goals, cutting the Wildcats' deficit to five, 9-4.
Still trailing 11-4 with 12 minutes remaining in regulation, the 'Cats scored five of the last six goals of the day to pull within three of Saint Joe's, 12-9, but ran out of time as the Hawks pulled out the league win.
Overall, SJU out shot the 'Cats 36-27, while netminder Amanda Monahan made 14 saves and Eva Finn caused three turnovers. Seniors Jane DiGregorio and Johnson each won three draw controls.
