'Cats Hang On in Win Over George Washington

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson lacrosse team won its Atlantic 10 opener on Friday night, defeating the George Washington Colonials 15-10 after a 13-goal first half.
The Wildcats, who improve to 7-1 on the season and 1-0 in league play, were outscored by the Colonials 5-2 over the final 30 minutes of play from inside Richardson Stadium. Junior attacker and reigning A-10 Player of the Week Erin Cooke scored four first half goals for Davidson, as the 'Cats had a dominant eight-goal advantage after one half of action.
Davidson opened up the day scoring seven-straight times before George Washington could find the back of the net, as the 'Cats a pair of scores from Emma Johnson and a free-position goal from Caroline Moran in the early goings. GW would pull within six goals from the Wildcats, at 10-4 with five minutes to go in the first half, before Cooke and Grace Fahey combined for three-straight goals to build the comfortable halftime lead.
In the second half the Colonials turned up the pressure, cueing up eight shots on goal and putting five in the back of the net. Despite the surge, netminder Amanda Monahan made six second-half saves and ended the day with 12 total stops to earn the win.
Overall, GW won 16 draw conrtrols compared to Davidson's 12, while the Wildcats out shot the Colonials 24-22 on goal. Defender Eva Finn was critical for the Wildcats' victory, causing five turnovers while senior Gianna New added two goals and five draw controls.

Davidson will return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. to take on George Mason in league play.
