BRONX, N.Y. – The Davidson College women's basketball team battled neck-and-neck against Fordham University in the first half of Atlantic 10 play on Saturday afternoon, but a 19-12 third quarter for the Rams proved to be too much for the 'Cats to overcome, ultimately falling 68-57.
Issy Morgan led the way for the Wildcats, shooting 7-13 from the floor and scoring 17 points. Elle Sutphin was the only other 'Cat to reach double-figures, recording 10 points and six rebounds. Overall, Fordham won on the glass 36-27, while Davidson outscored the Rams in the paint, 34-32.
Fordham jumped out hot inside their own Rose Hill Gym, building to a 10-0 lead through the first three minutes of the game. Junior Adelaide Fuller ended the early drought with an offensive putback to get Davidson on the board as the Wildcats exploded from there into a 13-2 run over the next 4:35, to take hold of their first lead of the day, 13-12.
While Fordham closed out the first quarter on a 5-0 run to lead 17-14, Morgan put the 'Cats right back into the game with a corner three to start Davidson off in the second. Keeping it close, Sarah Konstans also hit her first three of the day to make it 23-20, before the Rams made out on another 5-0 run to regain an eight-point lead. Cameron Tabor and Fuller would stop the surge for the home team with back-to-back layups before the Wildcats ended the half down six, 32-26.
Fordham got hot in the third quarter, shooting 8-16 (50%) from the floor and building out to a lead as large as 14 points. Davidson wouldn't get its first basket of the frame until Morgan hit a three with 4:11 to go, followed by Tabor's first trey of the day. The 'Cats would crawl back within 10 of the Rams before the quarter ended, but Fordham went into the final 10 minutes of play with a 51-38 lead.
Despite the late deficit, Morgan and Sutphin led Davidson on a 6-0 lead to begin the final quarter of play, making it a 51-44 game. The seven-point deficit was as close as the 'Cats would get back to the Rams however, as Fordham pushed their advantage back up to 16 points before the final buzzer.
