Second Half Offense Lifts 'Cats Past Panthers in Season Opener

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson lacrosse team opened up the 2022 season with a commanding 12-8 victory over High Point University on Saturday afternoon, as the Wildcats outscored the Panthers 10-4 in the second half.
The 'Cats, who won their season opener for the first time since 2019, trailed 4-2 at the halftime break before senior Gianna New scored three-straight during a 7-1 third quarter that put Davidson ahead 9-5.
While Erin Cooke and New opened up the fourth quarter with a pair of goals to extend the lead to seven, High Point made it a three-goal game, 11-8, with just 2:09 left to play after going on a 3-0 run of its own. Despite the Panthers' late comeback, Emily Weld netted her second goal of the day, with just 18 seconds left, to solidify the opening day victory, 12-8.
New ended the season opener with four goals on seven shots, marking her fourth career game with 4+ goals. Overall, the Wildcats had seven goal scorers, while Cooke led the day with five points off two scores and three assists.
Netminder Amanda Monahan made 11 saves on the day, while the Wildcats went 12-14 on clear attempts. Defensively, Eva Finn paced the 'Cats with three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
The Wildcats will return to action next Saturday at 11 a.m. to take on Coastal Carolina from inside Richardson Stadium.
