DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson Wildcats edged out Coastal Carolina by one goal each during the first three quarters of their non-conference match up on Saturday morning, ultimately defeating the Chanticleers 13-8 from inside Richardson Stadium.
With the win, the 'Cats improved to 2-0 on the young season and 3-1 in the all-time series against the Chants.
Gianna New and Julianne Carey led the goal-scoring brigade for Davidson, as the senior and sophomore each recorded a hat trick. Carey added one assist to the scoresheet while New was dominant on the draw with a game-high five draw controls. Freshman Riley Moore was key to Davidson's draw as well, as she grabbed four of her own, while Erin Cooke (2 goals, 2 assists) and Lauren Arkell (1 goal, 3 assists) ran the offense with four points apiece.
On the defensive end, Eva Finn had two caused turnovers and three ground balls while Amanda Monahan earned her second win in net this season, making 10 saves.
Senior Emily Weld got the Wildcats on the scoreboard first this morning, converting just one minute into the game off Cooke's first assist of the day. From there, Davidson and Coastal exchanged goals until the game was tied, 2-2, with 2:35 left in the first. While Carey netted her second goal of the day, just before the first period expired, the 'Cats then rattled off a three-goal tear, including freshman Josie Lambert's first career goal, to push the lead up to 5-2.
The Chanticleers threatened Davidson's lead near the end of the first half, after scoring two straight from Lauren Cremin and Avery McIlwaine to make it a 6-5 game. Despite the brief surge from the visitors though, Cooke scored from the top shelf as the first half buzzer sounded to bump Davidson's lead back up to two goals.
Over the final 30 minutes of play, the Wildcats outscored Coastal 6-3, and earned their largest lead of the day when New netted her sixth goal of the season to make it 11-7.
Overall, Coastal Carolina out-shot Davidson 28-26, while the Wildcats picked up 22 ground balls and were 18-21 on clear attempts
The 'Cats will be back in action on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. to take on Campbell.
