Mountaineers Scratch By 'Cats, 84-82

11/27/2022 4:23:00 PM | Women's Basketball

BOONE, N.C. – Despite outscoring Appalachian State in three quarters of play on Sunday afternoon, the Davidson women's basketball team fell 84-82 to the Mountaineers in non-conference action.

After trailing by just five going into the second half, the 'Cats caught up within three points of the Mountaineers on eight different occasions, but were unable to close the gap to secure the win.

With four seconds left, and down 84-81, the Wildcats drove down the court where Tomisin Adenupe scored a last-second putback with .08 ticks to go and drew the foul. But, after review, the foul was ruled on the floor and put Adenupe on the line for two shots instead of the and-one opportunity to potentially tie the game.

Four Wildcats scored in double-figures for the first time this season, led by 22 points from Elle Sutphin and a double-double (20 points, 10 rebounds) from Suzi-Rose Deegan. Maddie Plank added 19 points and seven rebounds and Mallorie Haines scored 11.

The Wildcats got off to a hot-shooting start inside Holmes Convocation Center, hitting 10 of their first 15 shots from the field backed by 10 first quarter points from Plank.

The New York native hit back-to-back treys to put Davidson ahead 12-7 at the 4:58-mark, before Haines drained a three to make it 23-13 for the Wildcats' largest lead of the day. With a driving layup before the end of the first, the 'Cats held onto a six-point, 25-19, lead after one.

The Mountaineers punched back in the second quarter, hitting four-straight three-pointers and six total treys, pulling ahead by as many as 10, 41-31, with 4:36 left in the half. Davidson refused to quit however, combining for an 8-1 run before the end of the half and making it a 46-41 game heading into the break.

Overall, Davidson shot a season-best 55 percent from the floor as the Mountaineers matched the pace with a 52 percent effort themselves. The Wildcats won the battle on the glass too, grabbing 35 rebounds compared to App State's 24.
