'Cats Find Success at NCCU Invite

DURHAM, N.C. -- The Davidson women's tennis team continued its fall schedule with resounding success this past weekend, competing in the Seventh Annual NCCU Invitational on the Dr. James W. Younge Tennis Courts from Oct. 7-9.
Nine institutions, including Davidson and North Carolina Central, competed in the event, as the field also featured Chowan, Norfolk State, North Carolina A&T, Radford, Shaw, Tennessee State, and Western Carolina. The invitational hosted 55 student-athletes in three singles flights, and 27 doubles pairings in two doubles flights.
"Each match we got better at implementing the systems we have in place, and I could visibly see them working towards executing to the best of their ability," said head coach Susanne Depka. "If we continue to build on what we are doing in practice, we will be very successful at the end of the fall and going into the spring. Once we build those habits, matches will become easier and it will be fun to watch the team improve."
Davidson saw one Wildcat compete in each singles final, as Emma Heiderscheit and Josie Schaffer battled head-to-head in the finals of Flight A. Linden Patterson and Kavya Patel also advanced to the finals of their respective flights, while the duos of Heiderscheit and Franny Shea and freshmen Olivia Hooper and Savanna Kollock advanced to the quarterfinal rounds in doubles play.
En route to the finals, Heiderscheit picked up three-set victories over Radford and Norfolk State and a two-set win against Western Carolina. On the other side of the Draw A bracket, Schaffer defeated N.C. A&T and Western in two and N.C. Central in three.
From the B draw, Kollock, Patel and Daniela Porges each advanced to the semifinals, but Patel prevailed with a 7-6 (1), 6-4 decision to advance to the finals on Sunday morning. In Flight C, Hooper and Patterson went head-to-head as well, with Patterson coming out on top 6-4, 3-6, 14-12.
