'Cats Top Dukes 2-0, Advance to A-10 Semis

DAVIDSON — Davidson rode two first-half goals and more stifling defense to a 2-0 win over Duquesne in the Atlantic 10 Tournament's opening round Friday night at Alumni Stadium.

Now 13-2-4, the fourth-seeded Wildcats advance to the tournament semifinals, where they'll meet a to-be-determined opponent in the round of four.

"It means everything," said senior Remi White. "The team has just worked so hard for this moment, and I have so much belief in everything we can accomplish."

Hosting an A-10 Tournament game for the first time, the Wildcats earned the program's second A-10 postseason win, following a 1-0 victory over UMass in the 2021 spring season.

"I'm just really pleased with everybody's performance and everybody's attitude on the field and off the field," said coach Adam Denton. "It gives us the opportunity to play in the next round."

White got the Wildcats started with a goal in the 18th minute. Her third score of the season came after a Hailey Braemer cross into the box bounced free. White said she "toe-poked" it into the net, giving the Wildcats the 1-0 edge.

Davidson then added to its lead in the 42nd minute when Maddie Moody kicked in a loose ball following a Sophia Caruso free kick from the right side.

"They came at great times," Denton said of the goals. "We've been working on getting the ball into dangerous areas and committing to those runs. We did that and put them under pressure."

Davidson keeper Mary Grace Bunch turned in her school-record 12th shutout of the season by notching four saves, including back-to-back, point-blank stops in the 66th minute.

Up Next
The Wildcats will learn their semifinal opponent on Saturday afternoon, after the final opening-round game — No. 1 Saint Louis vs. No. 8 Loyola Chicago — is complete.

In other action Friday night, No. 6 Saint Joseph's beat No. 3 VCU 1-0, while No. 2 Dayton topped No. 7 UMass 2-0.

The two highest remaining seeds in the semifinals will host the lowest remaining seeds.
