10/27/2022 5:36:00 PM | Field Hockey
The Davidson field hockey team enters its final two-game weekend of the season Friday when it visits Atlantic 10 Conference foe Saint Louis.
The Wildcats, now 4-13 overall and 0-6 in the A-10, will then return home and face longtime rival Appalachian State at Belk Turf Field in Sunday's season finale.
"This weekend presents a number of opportunities for our squad — our last two games of the 2022 season, two very well-known opponents and a chance to chase a conference win," said coach Zoe Almquist. "I think the team is excited and right now really playing loose and confident in each other. It is amazing to see the buy-in from every person on our squad and how well they are supporting each other and our goals as we head into the weekend."
LATEST ON THE 'CATS
Midfielder Charlie Kabelac continues to lead the Wildcats' offensive attack. She's tied for the eighth in the A-10 with seven goals and 19 points and scored twice in last weekend's 4-1 win over Ball State.
Sib Naaktgeboren and Caroline Wack are tied for third in the league with six assists.
Defensively, Sarah Minges is tied for the A-10 lead with five defensive saves, while goalkeeper Amani Sodhi is the reigning A-10 Defensive Player of the Week after making seven saves in 90 minutes of work last week.
Evie Lake and Natalie Naticchia added goals against Ball State.
SCOUTING THE BILLIKENS
Saint Louis enters Friday 4-14 and 0-6 in the A-10.
The Billikens have won two of their last three, however, including a 5-2 win over Lindenwood on Monday. Shaya Dry led SLU with two goals that day, while Josefina Perez had a goal and two assists. Perez leads the Billikens with five goals, five assists and 15 points this year.
Davidson won last year's contest 2-1 and leads the all-time series 18-5.
Friday's game will be held at the Principia School, located here.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
App will travel to Ohio Friday for its final MAC game, before coming to Belk Turf Field Sunday.
The Mountaineers (11-5) are surging, having won their last seven contests, including 10-1 over Queens last weekend.
Friederike Stegen leads App with 12 goals and 30 points, while Pauline Mangold and Anna Smarrelli have totaled 20 and 19 points, respectively.
The Davidson and App series dates to 1977, the second year of the Wildcat program, and the teams have met at least once every year since. They often met at least twice in a season as longtime Deep South Conference foes, and in eight seasons, they played three games. Davidson won 17 straight against the Mountaineers from 1989 to 1996.
The Wildcats lead the all-time series 41-35-1, while App won last year's meeting 6-3 in Boone.
