Wildcats Visit Rhode Island Sunday in A-10 Soccer Opener
9/17/2021 3:01:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Ten games remain on the Davidson women's soccer schedule. All 10 are within the Atlantic 10 Conference.
The Wildcats (4-3-1) enter league play Sunday with a 1 p.m. match at Rhode Island, which will conclude a four-game road swing.
"We're excited about the start of conference play," said Davidson coach Adam Denton. "It's a very tough conference with a lot of very good teams. We're going to prepare for each game at a time and look to have a positive performance and positive outcome. That's going to be our thought in each game we play, and Rhode Island is up first."
In the preseason coaches' poll, Davidson was picked seventh in the 14-team league. The Wildcats went 4-2-2 in A-10 play in the COVID-19 delayed season, which was played in the spring, and they reached the A-10 Tournament and final for the first time.
It's been a quick turnaround for all teams this fall, playing another competitive season just four months after the last. But Denton likes where the team is following eight non-conference matches.
"We've had our challenges with our group, and we've had positive responses," he said. "We've had some good moments and some moments we need to continue to improve upon. All in all, the non-conference season has allowed our group to grow."
LAST TIME OUT
Davidson is 2-0-1 in its last three games, including a 2-0 win at UNC Asheville on Sept. 12. Hannah Casey scored on a header in the 25th minute to give the Wildcats the lead, and Riley Patton's goal in the 63rd minute sealed it.
Goalkeeper Mary Grace Bunch was named A-10 Defensive Player of the Week after playing 200 minutes, including 110 in a scoreless draw with USC-Upstate, without allowing a goal.
SCOUTING THE RAMS
Rhode Island is 1-4-1 following a 2-0 loss at Princeton Sept. 12.
The Rams' lone win was a 1-0 decision Sept. 9 at Holy Cross.
UP NEXT
The Wildcats will host Saint Joseph's at Alumni Stadium Thursday, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m.
