
Ameres Breaks 51-Year-Old Record at USC Open

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Sophomore Dylan Ameres reset the men's track and field triple jump record as Davidson competed at the USC Open at the University of South Carolina Saturday.
Ameres broke a 51-year-old record set by Ray Swetenburg, stretching the tape 14.81-meters, placing third in the process. It was his first triple jump over 14 meters, only going as far as 13.99-meters indoors at the Camel City Invitational in February 2020.
Wildcat sophomore Ben Gordon Sniffen claimed second in the 800-meter run, bursting into the top-10 all-time with a time of 1:52.47. Senior Daniel Alvarez-Orlachia placed eighth in 1:53.88, while sophomore Joe dosReis crossed the line at 1:54.27.
Junior Cory Gaither had a strong day in the hurdles. The Statesville, N.C., native went 14.73 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles and 53.43 in the 400-meter hurdles, while freshman Isaac Bynum stopped the clock at 53.86
Sophomore Nick Tompkins dashed down the home stretch in the 100-meters in 11.03 seconds and leaned across the line ion 22.15 seconds in the 200-meters. Freshman Josh Hardin stopped the clock at 48.72 seconds in the 400-meter run.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Alavarez-Orlachia, Bynum, Gaither and Hardin placed seventh to end the day on the track.
In the throwing circle, junior Paul Mullinax stretched out his personal best in the hammer out to 45.59-meters, adding about a foot from his previous long done at the Vertklasse Meeting. Freshman Jack Stajos posted his best throw in the discus, marking a toss of 45.12-meters.
Davidson returns to the track Friday, Apr. 23 for the opening day of the Charlotte Invitational.
