NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Having homered in three straight games, Davidson's Ruben Fontes has been named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.
The honor is the first for the senior designated hitter/outfielder from Bonita, Calif., who has been dialed in at the plate.
"Ruben has played at a high level all season," said coach Rucker Taylor. "He might have led the country in line drive outs the first month of the season. He stayed consistent in his approach and habits, and he's seen the good results from that process. We're very happy for him to get this recognition."
Fontes is the fifth Wildcat to be honored by the A-10 this season and the third to be named Player of the Week, following Trevor Candelaria (March 1) and Parker Nolan (March 22). Additionally, Gabe Levy was Pitcher of the Week (March 1), and Ryan Wilson earned Rookie of the Week last week.
Fontes hit .385 with a 1.654 OPS in the four-game weekend series over Dayton, which resulted in three Wildcat wins. On Friday night, he tied the game with a two-run shot in the third inning and had an RBI-double in the fourth.
Saturday, Fontes gave the Wildcats the lead for good with a solo shot in the third, and his solo blast Sunday helped Davidson to a 5-0 lead.
Fontes is now tied with John Hosmer for the team lead with eight home runs, which ranks third in the A-10.
Davidson is back in action this weekend when it visits VCU for a four-game A-10 series.
