DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson women's lacrosse team pulled off a program-defining victory on Wednesday night, as the Wildcats dominated No. 16/18 Virginia Tech for 60-straight minutes to come out on top with a 15-8 victory from Richardson Stadium.
The Hokies are currently ranked by two of the three major women's lacrosse national polls, including as high as No. 16 from the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association.
With the win, Davidson picked up its first win over an ACC opponent since 2003 and first against a ranked opponent in the modern scoring era. The win over Virginia Tech also marked Head Coach Kim Wayne's 100th career victory at the helm of the 'Cats.
Though the Hokies struck first, the Wildcats led for the remainder of the contest thanks to a commanding performance in net by Amanda Monahan and an incredible offensive display from Erin Cooke. Between the pipes, Monahan had a career-high 15 saves, while Cooke led the 'Cats with a career-high five points, off four goals and one assist. Grace Fahey, Jane DiGregorio and Julianne Carey backed up Cooke's efforts, as the trio each recorded four points apiece. Fahey led the game with three assists, while Carey had a game-high seven draw controls.
Sam Rippley began the scoring brigade for Davidson, as the senior recorded two free position goals within the first eight minutes of the game. The surge wouldn't end there either, with Cooke finding Gianna New in front of the Hokies' crease, as New dodged two Virginia Tech defenders to find the back of the net and extend Davidson's lead to 5-2. By the end of the first, the 'Cats had built a 9-3 advantage and out shot the Hokies 12-10.
Over the final 30 minutes of work, Monahan collected eight saves, including several from point-blank range, while the offense recorded six more goals and secured the Wildcats' thrilling victory.
Davidson is scheduled to return to play on Friday, March 26, when the 'Cats begin Atlantic 10 play against George Mason in Fairfax, Va.
