OLEAN, NY -- Despite Chloe Welch scoring the second double-double of her career, eight first quarter turnovers and a 10-minute scoring drought for the Wildcats proved to be costly down the stretch, as Davidson fell to St. Bonaventure 71-58 this afternoon.
Welch produced 18 points paired with 10 rebounds for her 12th double-digit scoring effort this season, along with Suzi-Rose Deegan and Katie Turner who each tallied 10 points of their own. Turner hit two treys in the second half that allowed the senior guard to take over sole possession of third place in Davidson's record book for career three-point field goals made, as the Nevada native has now hit 215 three's in her Wildcat tenure.
The 'Cats got off to a strong start this afternoon, as Welch began the day with a corner three and driving layup off a dish from Cassidy Gould. Cameron Tabor followed suit with a three of her own before Deegan drove through the lane to sink a hook shot and allow Davidson to establish an early 10-7 lead.
Despite the advantage, by the first media timeout, the 'Cats and Bonnies were tied up at 10 points apiece. From there, St. Bonaventure heated up for a 10-minute, 20-0 scoring run and pulled ahead to a commanding 27-10 lead by the 7:34 mark of the second quarter.
Trailing by 17 points, the largest deficit of the game, the Wildcats snapped their drought and rattled off an 8-0 run of their own to pull back within nine of the Bonnies, down 27-16. With two minutes to go in the half, Davidson produced another 6-0 run, off 6-of-8 shooting, and came back within six of St. Bonaventure, trailing 34-26 heading into the final half of work.
The 'Cats outscored the Bonnies 22-16 from inside the paint in the second half, and came within three points of St. Bonaventure by the end of the third quarter. On the brink of a one-possession game, Adelaide Fuller drove through several Bonaventure defenders to drain a layup and make it a 41-38 game, the closest the game would get for the remainder of the day.
Davidson won the battle on the glass, 41-29, but matched a season-high 21 turnovers in the loss.
The Wildcats will return to the Reilly Center tomorrow night for a 6 p.m. rematch against St. Bonaventure.
