Wildcats Fall to VCU in A-10 Opener

RICHMOND, Va. -- The Davidson women's tennis team (1-4, 0-1 A-10) fell 7-0 to Atlantic 10 foe, VCU (3-5, 1-0 A-10) this afternoon, in both teams' 2021 league opener.
"We definitely improved in this match from the last," said Head Coach Susanne Depka. "Especially against a quality opponent. We were close in many matches, which shows we are moving in the right direction. I know if we continue to grow and learn with each match, the outcome will begin to turn in our favor. I believe tremendously in these young ladies and look forward to the next match."
The Wildcats failed to secure the doubles point to the Rams, as Nicole Krykanov and Josie Schaffer fell 6-1 on court one, while the duos of Franny Shea & Mira Gladstone, and Victoria Anyanwu and Ava Ignatowich fell by 6-2 scores on courts two and three, respectively.
Shea's singles battle on court five highlighted the day, as the sophomore took her opponent to a third set tiebreaker. Against VCU's Witmus, Shea won set two after falling 6-2 in set one and ultimately 10-4 in the tiebreaker set. Schaffer fought as Davidson's No. 1 singles player today as well, with the Colorado native falling 6-4 and 6-2 to VCU's Diaz Delgado, who ranks among the top-100 in women's college tennis.
Davidson will return to work next Saturday, when the Wildcats return home to host West Virginia State on Saturday, Feb. 27.
