SETTING THE SCENE... After going on a six-game win streak earlier this season, which was the longest run for the program in seven years, the Davidson Wildcats have dropped their last six contests. The 'Cats are currently in 10th place among A-10 standings with a 3-6 conference record, taking on the Explorers who are in 8th with a 5-7 league ledger.
PREVIOUSLY... The 'Cats come home to Belk Arena on a short week, having played St. Bonaventure in Olean on Sunday and Monday earlier this week. Davidson played the Bonnies back-to-back, dropping both match ups by 71-58 and 71-63 scores, respectively. On Monday's game, the Wildcats led for the entire first half, before getting outscored 23-11 in the third quarter. The 'Cats cut down the late deficit and tied the game at 52 all, but the Bonnies relied on their 52 percent shooting from the night to come out victorious.
VS. THE EXPLORERS... Since joining the Atlantic 10 in 2014-15, Davidson holds the all-time series at a 5-3 advantage with La Salle. The Wildcats have won their last four meetings with the Explorers. Head Coach Gayle Fulks is undefeated when taking on La Salle in her tenure. Davidson last met La Salle on March 3, 2020 in the first round of the A-10 tournament. The 'Cats defeated the Explorers 67-63 in Belk Arena.HOMETOWN HEROES... The 'Cats had back-to-back winning seasons at home (8-5 & 10-6) in 2018-19 and 2019-20, and haved averaged 69.2 points per game inside Belk Arena during that two-year stretch. This season, Davidson has protected its home turf and is currently 4-1 at home this season.
WELCH'S WAY... Chloe Welch has been Davidson's anchor this season, scoring in double figures in all but two of the Wildcats' games thus far. The Colorado native set a career-high 23 points in Davidson's opening #BeachBubble tournament, before topping that mark with 32 points against Appalachian State. Her 32-point performance came with 18 fourth quarter points and earned her her first Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honor on Dec. 14. Against the Bonnies on Monday, Welch dropped 23 points, marking her 13th scoring performance in double-digits this season and fifth 20+ point effort.
AUSSIE MAGIC... Davidson's Australian pipeline of Adelaide Fuller, Cassidy Gould and Suzi-Rose Deegan has proven to have fire power for the Wildcats this year. The trio averages a combined 27.4 points per game and are three of Davidson's top four scorers this season. Fuller earned her first career start on Jan. 10 against Rhode Island, and Deegan, the reigning A-10 Rookie of the Year, is averaging 11.8 points per game over her last six outings.
TURNER'S TOUCH... Senior guard, Katie Turner has already left her mark on the Wildcats' program throughout her career. She moved to third all-time in career assists (420) after dishing 127 assists last season and is now just 49 assists away from taking over the second all-time slot. The Nevada native is also a member of Davidson's 1,000 point club and moved into fourth all-time for career three-pointers now with 216 total, after draining 66 three's last season. She continues to climb this program rank, as she is just 15 made-three's away from taking over the program record. With her first three-pointer of the series against St. Bonaventure, Turner took over sole possession of third place Davidson's record book for career made-three's.
THE PIPELINE... Davidson currently has four Australia natives on its 2020-21 roster, in Suzi-Rose Deegan, Adelaide Fuller, Cassidy Gould and Keeley Evans. Assistant coach James Janssen also calls Australia home, as the Wildcats are just one of two NCAA teams with four Australians on its roster.
