Wildcats, Fernicola Place at Southeast Open

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Sophomore Jake Fernicola swept the heavyweight freshman/sophomore bracket of the Southeast Open Sunday in wrestling's first meet of the season.
 
The Piedmont, S.C., took the title by winning by decision 4-0 over his first opponent from VMI, then pinning his second opponent from Tiffin University. Fernicola then pinned his third opponent in the semis before winning by a 3-1 decision over Jacob Sartorio from Appalachian State. 

Sophomore 149-pounder Garrett Stewart placed second after defeating his first two opponents by decision, 6-3 and 3-1, then pinning his third opponent. Stewart fell in the ensuing round to a competitor from Campbell, 7-2. 
 
Sophomore Bryce Sanderlin won his first and third bout by a 3-2 decision both times, and pinned his second opponent. The Chesepeake, Va. native finished third in the 157-pound class.  
 
Freshman Noah Frack placed fourth in his collegiate debut in the 149-pound class. He won his first round with a 2-0 decision before a 16-1 technical fall over his opponent from Roanoke. The Topton, Pa. native dropped his final two matches by decision. 

A pair of Wildcats finished in sixth place. Senior Kyle Gorant took sixth in the open division and Gavin Damasco took sixth in the 141-pound class.

UP NEXT 
Davidson returns to the mats Saturday, Nov. 13, when they host Rutgers, Clarion and Chattanooga for this year's Quad Meet. The first matches will be at 10 am, followed by the second at 11:30 am and third at 1 pm.
