BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Davidson women's basketball team earned its fourth straight victory on Friday afternoon, coming out on top of a 65-64 bout against Austin Peay State University.
The Wildcats shot a season-best 52.1 percent from the floor, backed by double-digit scoring from Cassidy Gould (12), Issy Morgan (12) and Elle Sutphin (11). Senior Sarah Konstans added nine points to the score sheet, off 4-of-5 shooting, and Chloe Welch dropped in four to pair with a team-high five rebounds and three steals. Overall, the 'Cats won 27-23 on the glass and stifled the Governors into 20 turnovers.
In the first four minutes of play, the Wildcats struggled to find their first field goal as Austin Peay took off running with a 10-0 lead. The 'Cats halted the Govs' early surge however, picking off three steals to turn into six straight points and cut their deficit down to seven, 13-6, before the first quarter ended.
As Davidson hit four of its last six field goals in the first, the 'Cats carried that momentum into the second with a 10-0 run of their own to take their first lead of the day at 21-20. Morgan and Konstans combined for two give-and-go shots and Gould solidified the lead with a turnaround jumper in the paint. After a 16-8 advantage in the second frame, Davidson managed to head into the break with a 27-26 lead.
Davidson's best quarter awaited them in the third, as the 'Cats dropped 20 points and took their largest lead of the day, 45-40, thanks to a three-pointer from Cameron Tabor and back-to-back drives from Morgan and Gould.
With just a three-point advantage going into the final 10 minutes of play, the Wildcats opened up the frame with six-straight points thanks to a pair of free throws from Tabor and two layups from Sutphin. Though the 'Cats led by as many as eight points, Austin Peay came back within two in the final 15 seconds of play. Gould drew a foul with 12 seconds remaining and hit the go-ahead free throws to put Davidson up 65-61 and push the game out of reach, despite an Austin Peay buzzer-beating basket.
