Already an Atlantic 10 champion, Davidson diver Daniel Valmassei is headed to the NCAA Zone B Championship this week in Athens, Ga.
The junior will be among the 36 men competing in the opening round of NCAA competition. The three-meter competition begins Monday at 3:45 p.m., with the one-meter event set for Tuesday at 11 a.m.
"This is what I've been preparing for for the last seven months," said Valmassei.
Valmassei qualified by surpassing the one-meter qualifying standard (300 points) eight times during the season, including totaling 310.65 points to win the A-10 championship Feb. 20 in Ohio. He will also compete in the three-meter competition. He finished in second in the A-10 in the three-meter.
"He always rises to the occasion," said diving coach Greg Ferrucci. "I think he's going to hang with the best of them. He just has to stay steady like he always has, like he did at A-10s."
A Missouri native, Valmassei competed in gymnastics for 11 years before beginning to dive in high school. He attended Division III Trinity University for two years and won multiple conference titles. Last year, he decided to transfer to Davidson.
"It's been so wonderful for me," he said. "I don't have enough words to express my gratitude."
The top 18 divers in prelims will advance to finals. From there, the top 10 will advance to the NCAA Championships (March 25-28) in the one-meter event, while the best eight will move on in the three-meter.
