Furman Sends Wildcats to First Setback of the Season

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Davidson suffered its first setback of the season with a 4-0 defeat on the road to Furman Saturday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center in men's tennis.
Davidson fell to 4-1 on the season, while the Paladins moved to 3-3. The two teams were playing each other for the 27th time dating back to 1988.
The matched opened with Furman taking two 6-2 wins at No. 1 and 3 positions to secure the team point. It then won three of the four singles matches that finished to earn the team victory.
The Wildcats lone team point came from Axel Fries at No. 2, where the senior picked up a pair of 6-4 wins to score his third win of the season.
Fellow senior Thomas Mason dropped his first singles match of the year in five matches when he was swept in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3.
Seeing his three-match winning streak halted was Sam Kavarana at No. 4 after a 6-2, 6-3 defeat.
Davidson wraps up a busy week by playing at Wake Forest tomorrow with match time set for 4:30 p.m.
