GENEVA, Ohio — Davidson diver Daniel Valmassei won the one-meter competition at the Atlantic 10 Championships Wednesday evening at the SPIRE Institute.
A junior, Valmassei is in his first season at Davidson after competing at Division III Trinity University, where he won league titles the last two seasons.
Valmassei totaled 310.65 points and also had the top score in prelims (298.15).
"I'm actually pretty speechless," said Davidson diving coach Greg Ferrucci. "Going into finals after winning a preliminary can feel like a lot of pressure to repeat the same performance. He ran his own race, was solid as a rock and did not miss a single dive."
Valmassei's front 2 1/2 pike earned 54.6 points, and his best dive was a reverse 2 1/2 tuck, which earned 57.
His win was one of three on the day for Davidson, as Sarah Helen Shepherd (200 IM) and Siena Senn (500 free) posted wins in the women's championship.
Davidson seniors Brian Hynes and Crossan Cooper placed fourth and fifth in the 500 free, respectively, finishing a second apart (4:26.17, 4:27.17).
Hynes joined Alex Strasser, Kevin Andrews and Kilian Quinn on the 200 free relay team that placed sixth (1:21.81).

Competition resumes with prelims at 10 a.m. Friday and finals to follow at 6:30 p.m.
