RICHMOND, Va. — Davidson saw its season-high five-game winning streak come to an end Sunday when it was unable to shake off a cold shooting fourth quarter in falling on the road at Richmond, 69-57, inside the Robins Center in Atlantic 10 play.
The Wildcats (12-7, 5-1 A-10) dropped their first league game of the season after going just 4-of-18 from the floor in the final quarter, including just 2-of-11 from behind the arc.
Suzi-Rose Deegan had her fourth double-double on the season with game highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds to go with four assists and two steals.
Fellow Australian Cassidy Gould came off the bench to score 12 and Katie Turner dished out seven assists to go with her nine points.
Richmond (9-11, 2-4 A-10) had a trio of double figure scorers, led by Claire Holt's 14 points. Jaide Hinds-Clarke scored 13, including a buzzer-beating three at the end of the third quarter, and pulled in eight rebounds, while Kate Klimkiewicz dropped in 12 points.
A three-pointer from Deegan, her third of the game, at the 8:07 mark in the fourth quarter gave Davidson a brief 50-49 lead, but it would be the last lead the 'Cats held, as Richmond pulled ahead with five straight points for a 54-50 advantage.
Another Deegan bucket, a layup, got the 'Cats within 56-54 with 4:03 on the clock, but the Spiders responded again and went ahead 61-54. Chloe Welch swished home a three-pointer at the 1:12 mark to close the gap at 61-57 for the closest the Wildcats could get.
Richmond put the game away by drawing an intentional foul, hitting both free throws and then converting on its possession for a 65-57 lead and just 37 ticks left. The Spiders hit 7-of-13 shots and added another eight points at the stripe in the fourth quarter.
Davidson finished the game shooting 38.6 percent (22-of-57) and 8-of-23 from deep, while Richmond shot 41 percent overall and had a 39-33 edge in rebounds.
Trailing 11-8 to open the game, Davidson ran off a 12-3 spurt started by a Gould three-pointer to close the first quarter up 20-14.
Deegan drilled the 'Cats' fifth three-pointer of the contest to start the next quarter for a nine-point lead, but then the offense went cold. Richmond was able to take advantage with a 13-2 run to grab a 27-25 lead at the 3:32 mark. It went into the break up 32-29, just the sixth time this year Davidson had trailed at halftime.
The third quarter saw Davidson overcome a six-point deficit (37-31) with a 14-5 run to go up 45-42 before the Spiders tied things up at the end with the buzzer-beating three from Hinds-Clarke to make it 47-all.
Davidson stays on the road and will next travel to Rhode Island, Jan. 29, for an Education Day game at 11 a.m.
