KINGSTON, R.I. — Suzi-Rose Deegan registered her second straight double-double, and the duo of Chloe Welch and Adelaide Fuller helped the Wildcats pull away from Rhode Island in a 77-70 road win Wednesday morning as part of the Rams' Education Day event inside the Ryan Center in Atlantic 10 women's basketball action.
Davidson moved to 13-7 on the season and rebounded from its first league defeat last Sunday to improve to 6-1 in A-10 play.
Deegan tallied game highs of 25 points (10-of-16 shooting, 5-for-7 at the line), with 16 of them coming in the second half, and 11 rebounds to go with a season-best six assists. The double-double gives the freshman five on the season.
Welch broke up a 67-all tie with a go-ahead corner three-pointer, her third of the game, with 1:22 left and swished home two free throws in final 25 seconds to finish with 11 points.
Fuller came up big as well in the closing seconds with an offensive rebound put-back to give the Wildcats a 72-69 lead with 28 ticks on the clock. She then halted a Rams' out-of-bounds play with a steal to help preserve a 74-70 lead with 24 seconds left. The freshman ended the day with eight points, two blocks and a steal.
Joining Deegan and Welch in double figures was Cassidy Gould with 12 points to go with a season-high seven rebounds and a career-best tying four steals.
Rhode Island (10-9, 3-4 A-10) had a trio of double-figure scorers, led by Davida Dale's 18 points. Nicole Jorgensen chipped in 13 points and Meghan Oberg came off the bench for a double-double, 12 points and 10 rebounds, as well as five assists.
Davidson had a 67-61 lead after a pair of Deegan free throws with 3:08 to go, but the Rams ran off six straight points to tie things up with 1:40 left in the quarter. That's when Welch drained the three-pointer on the 'Cats' next possession to go up for good.
Rhode Island used a 12-2 run, doubling up the Wildcats (12-6) early in the first quarter and held a 14-13 lead after 10 minutes.
Davidson quickly flipped that score around in its favor, opening the next quarter with 10 consecutive points in the first three minutes to go 23-14. The lead would reach 11 (35-24) on a Sarah Konstans' free throw with 1:48 to go before Rhody came up with seven unanswered points to end the quarter and cut the 'Cats' lead to 35-31 at the break.
The Wildcats finished the game shooting 46.7 percent from the floor and pocketed a season-best 10 steals to go with a season-high 23 fast-break points. Rhode Island shot 40 percent from field and had a 45-36 advantage on the glass, with 17 offensive rebounds.
Davidson returns home this weekend to take on Massachusetts Sunday, Feb. 2, at 1 p.m.
