LYNCHBURG, VA. — The Davidson volleyball team went 1-1, with a win over Elon, Saturday on the opening day of the two-day Liberty Invitational.

The Wildcats (2-3) earned a 3-2 victory over Elon after taking a 3-1 loss to Virginia Tech earlier in the day.

"Overall, I thought we played good defense and had good defensive effort, whether it was blocking or behind-the-block digging," said Davidson coach Chris Willis. "We had times when our attacking was really good."

Sophomore Hattie Rodriguez led the way with 14 kills in each match.

"She's swinging well," said Willis. "She's attacking with good hits on the ball and making good choices when she swings."

Against the Phoenix, the Wildcats won the second and fourth sets by 25-19 margins, then took the decisive fifth 15-12 behind three kills from Alison Jennings, who finished with 10. Remi Lehnertz added 13 kills.

In the tournament opener against Virginia Tech, the Wildcats won the first set 25-21 and played the Hokies tight throughout.

"I'm definitely encouraged by playing a bigger team and being able to compete with them," said Willis.
