NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – After leading Davidson to a pair of shutouts last week, the duo of sophomore goalkeeper Mary Grace Bunch and forward Hailey Braemer were named the Atlantic 10 Defender and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced today by the league office for games played from September 16-22.
The two weekly honors give Davidson four on the season, as Bunch and Braemer join Sabine Chandler and Sarah L'Hommedieu as weekly award winners this year. The sophomore keeper and freshman forward played big roles in last week's shutouts of VMI (T, 0-0) and Saint Joseph's (W, 1-0), which helped keep the Wildcats' unbeaten streak intact at 4-0-1 through the past five games.
Bunch picked up a pair of shutouts between the pipes in games against the Keydets and the Hawks to go with four saves and a save percentage of 1.000. The sophomore's two shutouts, including the 1-0 win versus the Hawks, were her first two of the year. The Raleigh, N.C., native made one save in relief of Sarah L'Hommedieu against VMI and held onto the shutout through two scoreless overtime periods. Bunch then registered three saves in Davidson's fifth straight shutout during their victory Sunday against Saint Joseph's.
Braemer had a strong week as well in helping Davidson keep the unbeaten streak alive, scoring the game-winner in the 'Cats' A-10 opening win against Saint Joseph's on Sunday. It was the Nashville, Tenn., native's first game-winner of her collegiate career and the second goal of the season. The rookie took seven shots on the week, including a team-best five during a scoreless draw against VMI.
Davidson (6-3-1, 1-0 A-10), which is on its longest unbeaten streak since 2007, will look to keep the momentum going with a pair of games this week against Duquesne (Sept. 26) and St. Bonaventure (Sept. 29).
