ROCK HILL, S.C. — The Davidson volleyball team rallied in its season opener Friday night, but the Wildcats came up just short in a 3-2 loss to host Winthrop on the opening night of the Cristi Curtis Invitational.
"I thought it came down to serving and passing, and they served much more efficiently and took us out of rhythm," said Davidson coach Chris Willis.
After dropping the first two sets 25-18 and 25-22, Davidson responded with a 25-10 win in the third, twice scoring six straight points, including to close it. Then the Wildcats turned a 24-22 deficit in the fourth set into a 26-24 win to force the decisive fifth.
"I'm really proud of our team," said Willis.
Winthrop built a 9-4 lead in the fifth and secured the match victory with a 15-8 set win.
Ellie Crosley and Emma McLaughlin led the Wildcats with 10 kills each, while Alison Jennings, Remi Lehnertz and Hattie Rodriguez had nine each. Sydney Champaigne added 40 assists, and Josie Treadwell had 19 digs.
The Wildcats have a quick turnaround for the second day of action at Winthrop. They'll play Morehead State at 10 a.m. Saturday, then face N.C. A&T at 4 p.m.
"For us, that's great," said Willis. "It's a challenge to adjust to the styles of the different teams."
