ORLANDO, Fla. — In a matchup of No. 2 seed vs. No. 3 seed, the second-seeded Richmond Spiders prevailed ending Davidson's season with a 4-0 decision in the semifinals of the A-10 Men's Tennis Championship Saturday morning at the USTA National Campus.
The Wildcats concluded a successful season with a 13-9 record and made their second straight appearance in the semifinals. Richmond won its sixth straight to move to 18-5 and will play No. 1 seed VCU in the championship match Sunday.
Davidson played a down to the wire finish with the Spiders in the regular season before falling 4-3, but Saturday it was unable to pull out a point despite all the matches having close games played. Richmond would take wins of 6-4 and 6-2 in the doubles and then secured singles wins at No. 1 (6-4, 6-1), 5 (6-2, 6-2) and 6 (6-3, 7-5) for the match win.
Despite falling at No. 3 doubles, the pair of Douglas MacIntosh and Camden Mazzoni led the team with a career-best 10-9 record on the year.
Freshman Brooks Green, who fell at No. 6 singles in a close battle, had a strong first year by going 12-7 and was one of four Wildcats to reach double-digits in wins.
Fellow classmate Sam Kavarana, who was tied 1-1 in his second match at No. 3 after pulling out a first-set tie-breaker, 8-6, before the match was halted, also had a stellar first year. The Charleston, S.C., native went a team-best 14-4 on the season with 12 of those wins coming at No. 3.
Sophomore Yash Parikh concluded a solid year at 13-6 after his match was stopped at 6-4, 3-5 at the No. 2 position.
The Wildcats other double-figure winner on the season was Mazzoni with a breakout sophomore year in going 11-7.
Davidson, which will return all six starters from this year's team, finished the season with 70 singles as a team in 113 matches and added another 30 wins in doubles play.
