ORLANDO, Fla. — Davidson avenged a tough regular season defeat to Duquesne by nailing down a 4-0 shutout win Thursday evening in the quarterfinals of the A-10 Women's Tennis Championship at the USTA National Campus.
The Wildcats (14-10) advance to the semifinals and will take on top-seeded VCU tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
After falling 4-3 to the Dukes in a tightly-played match earlier this season that saw five of the singles matches go to three sets, Davidson prevailed this time with three straight-set singles wins and earned the doubles point to secure the match.
Just like the first round, the 'Cats opened the match by taking the doubles point on the strength of two 6-2 wins at No. 1 and 3 positions. The duo of Megan Scholvinck and Elizabeth Truluck moved to 12-10 on the year with a win at the top spot, and Gabrielle Centenari and Nicole Krykanov continued their successful season by running their record to 12-4.
Centenari and Truluck carried that winning doubles success over to singles in securing wins of 6-0, 7-5 and 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 and 5 positions, respectively. The wins were Centenari's 11th of the year and Truluck's team-best 17th.
Scoring the final team point was junior Samantha Armas in a clean sweep of 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 to move her record to a personal-best 15-6 on the season, second-best behind Truluck.
This is Davidson second time since joining the A-10 it has reached the semis of the league championship. The Wildcats made it this far in 2016 when they moved onto the championship match before falling to VCU.
