ORLANDO, Fla. — The Davidson women's tennis team got off to a solid start in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championship by scoring a 4-1 win against 12th-seeded Saint Joseph's Wednesday morning at the USTA National Campus Courts.
Fifth-seeded Davidson (13-10) moves onto the quarterfinals where it will face fourth-seeded Duquesne, which earned a 4-0 win against St. Bonaventure. The match is set for 6 p.m. Thursday night. Both teams met during the regular season, with the Dukes pulling out a 4-3 decision.
The Wildcats, who have been off since April 13, showed no rust in starting the match by taking the doubles point after wins of 6-3 and 6-2 at No. 2 and 3 positions, respectively. Alexandra Abele and Samantha Armas moved to 12-9 with the win at No. 2, while Gabrielle Centenari and Nicole Krykanov ran their record to 11-4 on the year.
Abele and Centenari led the way in singles action, as the 'Cats took three more points to secure the win. The junior Abele nailed down her 14th win with a 6-3, 6-0 decision at No. 2. Centenari became the fourth 'Cat to hit double-digits in wins on the season by giving up just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3.
Scoring the final team point was freshman Elizabeth Truluck, who ran her record to a team-best 16-6 after netting a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 5. The first-year player is 13-6 at that position.
