DURHAM, N.C. — Beginning a busy week, Davidson started it off with a trip to No. 13 Duke Monday afternoon but the Blue Devils proved too much in taking a 17-8 decision in women's lacrosse at Koskinen Stadium.
Duke ran its record to 7-2 on the campaign, while the Wildcats dropped its second-straight game to go to 6-2.
Sophia Sgroi and Jane Digregorio gave the 'Cats a 2-1 lead in the first eight minutes of the game, but Duke answered with an 8-1 run to go up 9-3 by halftime and never looked back.
Digregorio and Emily Weld scored two goals each to pace the offense. Sam Rippley had a career-high three assists and added a goal for four points, and four other Wildcats scored one goal apiece.
The Blue Devils' Charlotte North had a game-high five goals, followed by Olivia Jenner with three goals and two assists for five points. Three other players had two goals each, while Eva Greco dished out two assists.
Rippley brought the 'Cats within six at 10-4 early in the second half, but Duke came back with four consecutive goals in a six-minute span to push the lead to double-digits at 14-4 and 21:27 to go.
Davidson then rattled off four straight goals, two of them by Weld and Rippley added two assists during the spurt to make it 14-8 with 8:29 left in the game. Duke though converted on three free-position shots in the final eight minutes for the final score of 17-8.
In goal for the 'Cats, Delaney Guhman stopped a season-high 13 shots to go with a season-best seven groundballs.
Duke had advantages in shots (40-17), groundballs (27-12) and draw controls (22-5) on the day.
Davidson will next open Atlantic 10 play this weekend with home games against UMass and George Washington, Friday and Sunday, March 22 & 24.
