
Oettl Breaks 1k Record, Men's T&F Cruise at Valentine Invite

BOSTON –Men's track and field freshman Josef Raphael Oettl broke Davidson's 1,000-meter school record, highlighting a stellar day for the 'Cats at the BU Valentine Invitational at the Tennis & Track Center on the campus of Boston University.
Oettl raced around the banked track in 2:28.33, fourth in his section, and broke Patrick Rollo's '16 indoor banked track best of 2:29.48, set in 2016.
The Wildcats had a trio of personal bests in the 800-meter run, led by freshman Bryce Kalsu. Kalsu placed fourth in his section with a time of 1:54.69. Sophomore's Max Higgins and Taylor Drake also notched PR's, going 2-3 in their heat with times of 1:56.76 and 1:56.98, respectively.
Senior Dylan Carmack posted a massive PR in the mile, stopping the clock in 4:15.59, nearly seven seconds faster than his mark from 2017. Also elevating his best time was freshman Max Pearson (4:19.38).
Senior Jacob Hostetler placed in the top 20 of nearly 200 competitors in the 400-meter run, stopping the clock in 48.81 seconds. Freshman Cory Gaither set a new personal best in the event, racing two laps in 50.21 seconds. Hostetler also turned in a great performance in the 200-meters with a time of 22.13 seconds.
Gaither just missed out on the 60-meter hurdle invitational final, stopping the clock in 8.45 seconds, the third fastest in his preliminary heat. Senior Sean Caveney turned in an 8.65 second performance.
Freshman Colin Ross led the 3,000-meter group, placing fifth in his heat with a time of 8:34.62. Fellow freshmen Trent Turbyfill turned in a time of 8:44.92, Nico Agosta 8:45.32 and sophomore Jake Carver 8:48.19.
Davidson next sends athletes to the Queens University Combined Events meet on Tuesday, Feb. 12 in Charlotte. The whole squad returns Saturday, Feb. 23 for the opening day of the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championship in Fairfax, Va.
