NEW YORK, N.Y. — Despite another 20-point outing from freshman Suzi-Rose Deegan and a double-double from junior Sarah Donovan, Davidson came up short at Columbia, 63-60, Monday evening in women's basketball action inside Levien Gym.
The Wildcats (7-4) had their three-game winning streak halted after their seven-point second-half lead (44-37) was erased in the fourth quarter and they were unable to overcome a poor shooting second half (11-of-31, 2-for-14 on threes and 2-of-6 at the charity stripe).
Columbia's Janiya Clemmons broke up a 53-all tie at the 6:05 mark on a layup and a few minutes later added another bucket to make it 57-53. She hit 3-of-4 free throws in the closing seconds to give her 20 points on the night and help seal the win.
Davidson got within two, 59-57, on a pair of Chloe Welch free throws with 59 ticks left. Then after four straight points by the Lion, Deegan hit a three-ball with four seconds remaining to make it 63-60.
After a Columbia timeout, the Wildcats scooped up a loose ball and got off a last-second shot to try and force overtime, but Welch's shot just past midcourt hit the side of the rim and fell short to end the game.
Deegan scored 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting, with a trio of threes, and added four rebounds. Donovan tallied her fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Lions (6-3) other double-digit scorer was Sienna Durr with 14 points and she added six rebounds. Columbia finished the second half shooting 13-of-26 and 5-for-8 from behind the arc.
Leading 44-37 in the third quarter, Davidson saw Columbia close within one at 47-46 on three straight three-pointers to end the quarter. The Lions and 'Cats were tied three times in the early goings of the fourth quarter before Clemmons pushed the Lions ahead for good with her four consecutive points.
Davidson won the opening 10 minutes by hitting 6-of-10 shots to grab a 15-13 lead after the first quarter. Columbia though countered with a 7-0 spurt in the first two minutes of the second quarter for a five-point lead and the Wildcats were forced to burn a timeout.
The 'Cats took charge from there, forcing six Lion turnovers on defense and rattling off a 19-7 run on the other end to finish out the quarter, capped off by a buzzer-beating three-ball from Deegan in the left corner, for a 34-27 lead at the half.
Davidson takes a 12-day break for final exams before it will play host to cross-county rival Charlotte, Dec. 21 at 1 p.m.
GAME NOTES: This was just the second meeting all-time between both team's women's basketball programs … the series is tied at 1-apiece … the Wildcats had their two-game road winning streak snapped tonight … Deegan's 20-point outing was the third time she's gone over 20 … she has scored in double figures a team-best eight times … Donovan's double-double gave her 18 for her career … she has 23 double-digit rebounding games in her career.
