WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team closed out their Fall season this past weekend, Nov. 8-10, with their annual trip to the Wake Forest Invitational. Several Wildcats took part in the three-day event in both singles and doubles.
The trio of Thomas Mason, Camden Mazzoni and Douglas Macintosh had good runs in singles play. Mason in the D singles bracket lost his first match, 7-5, 7-5, but regrouped to net a 7-6(4), 6-1 win vs. Mark Dillon of North Carolina. The senior then downed another ACC foe with a strong 6-3, 7-6(4) win over a player from Clemson.
The duo Mazzoni and Macintosh reached the finals in the F singles bracket, facing off against each other. Mazzoni won 6-4, 6-3 vs. Mercer's Daniel Krashin in the first round, then took a pair of three-set matches, vs. Karl Katlaps of Radford (6-4, 1-6, 6-4) and Campbell's Gustavs Lukstins (0-6, 6-4, 6-2) to reach the finals. There, he topped teammate Macintosh by the score of 7-5, 6-3.
Macintosh's run started with an impressive three-set comeback against his Richmond opponent, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 and then cruised past Tim Pitts of Clemson (6-1, 6-2) before winning 6-4, 6-3 vs. Peter Glenn of Charlotte to reach the finals.
Yash Parikh, Sam Kavarana and Brooks Green scored at least one singles win each in the B, C and E brackets, respectively. Parikh opened with a 6-3, 6-0 win vs. Zak Talic of Coastal before falling to Clemson's Jacob Jahn, 6-1, 6-4. Kavarana regrouped after falling in his first round match (6-4, 7-5) to pick up a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory against Mercer's Carver Arant. He added one more win over the weekend vs. Ricky Bell of Richmond, 6-3, 6-4.
Green opened with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win vs. Wofford's Lucas Cerbelli before having to retire.
Davidson's best showing in doubles play came from the teams of Axel Fries and Macintosh along with Parikh and Matthew Rose in the A2 and B1 doubles brackets. Fries and Macintosh earned a 6-0 win vs. Tennessee Tech, while the other Wildcat team came away with impressive wins of 7-6(5) and 6-4 against teams from Clemson and UNC.
The Wildcats will take some time off before starting their Spring season with a pair of road matches at Fordham and Sacred Heart, Jan. 25-26.
