DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team had a successful two days at their own invitational over the weekend on Saturday and Sunday at the Davidson Tennis Courts. The Wildcats competed against Southern Methodist, USC-Upstate and Queens during the two-day invite.
Every 'Cat that played over the weekend recorded at least one singles win, with three players picking up three wins, while all the doubles teams also had at least one victory. The invitational was a points system, with points being determined based on position. The No. 1 singles position was worth 16 points and going two points down at each position to No. 8, which was worth two points. The top doubles spot was worth eight points, then going down to No. 4, which was worth two.
"It was a good weekend for the guys," said head coach Drew Barrett. "Despite some early challenges with the rain to start things off Saturday morning, we were still able to get all the matches in and the guys responded well. We were able to get a lot of guys on the courts, playing several matches during the two days and helping them to continue to work on the things we have been putting into practice during their individual times. It was just our second Fall event, so we look to continuing to build upon what we did this weekend throughout the rest of the Fall season."
Pacing Davidson in singles play was the trio of Yash Parikh, Thomas Mason and Brooks Green, as all three picked up three wins each. Parikh had a team-best 42 points, playing the three top positions during his three matches. An A-10 All-Second Team pick last year, the third-year player opened with a 6-1, 6-3 win vs. USCU at No. 2 and then scored a win after his SMU opponent had to retire during a 6-3, 4-1 match at No. 3. Parikh closed out the weekend with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at No. 1 vs. Queens.
Mason netted a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4 to start his weekend vs. his Spartan opponent and then rolled to a 6-4, 6-2 triumph against SMU at No. 4 as well. Capping the weekend off was a super tie-breaker win (6-4, 5-7, 10-2) vs. Queens at No. 4 to give him 30 points.
Earning 24 points was Green, playing all three of his single matches at No. 5. He scored a 6-1, 6-4 win vs. USC-Upstate, then gave up just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 triumph against his Mustang opponent. He closed out with a 6-0, 7-6(2) victory vs. Queens.
Freshman William Clark had a strong weekend with three wins as well, two of them against Queens (6-2, 4-6, 10-6 and 6-2, 6-2) and the other coming against SMU at No. 6 by the score of 6-2, 6-3.
The duo of Sam Kavarana and Axel Fries had two wins each, giving them 30 and 26 points, respectively. The sophomore Kavarana, an A-10 All-Second Team pick last year, won 6-4, 6-4 vs. USCU at No. 1 and then had a 7-5, 6-2 victory vs. Southern Methodist at No. 2. Fries grabbed wins of 6-4, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 and 2 positions, respectively, against USCU and Queens.
