NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Atlantic 10 Conference released its annual women's basketball preseason rankings Tuesday and Davidson was picked to finish fifth as voted on by the league's coaches.
The Wildcats are coming off their best finish in the A-10 since joining the league. They received 135 points, just three away from fourth-place Saint Louis and several points ahead of George Mason (116).
"We are pleased to be picked in the top-five this season in the preseason A-10 poll," said third-year head coach Gayle Fulks. "While it is a reflection of the growth our program has shown in the past two seasons, it is still the final poll at the end of the season that matters to our team the most."
The Wildcats went 17-15 overall last year with a 10-6 record in A-10 games (tied for 4th place) and reached the postseason with an invite to the Women's Basketball Invitational. The 17 total wins were the most since a 22-win season during 2012-13, which was the last time they earned a postseason bid as well.
The season begins for the 'Cats, Nov. 5, when they play host to Georgetown at John M. Belk Arena for a first-time matchup for both women's basketball programs.
The VCU Rams were selected as the 2019-20 preseason favorite after receiving 11 first-place votes for a total of 189 points. They finished last season 13-3 to share the regular season title and secure the No. 1 seed, but ultimately finished the season as the A-10 runner-up before advancing to the second round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT).
Dayton was picked second in the poll with 177 points and one first-place vote followed closely by Fordham, last year's regular season co-champion and A-10 Conference Champion, with 174 points and one first place vote. The Flyers will host the A-10 Women's Basketball Championship this year at UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio, March 6-8.
The Atlantic 10 wraps up preseason coverage with the announcement of the 2019-20 preseason all-conference teams on Thursday, Oct. 31.
