Davidson Has Successful Trip to NCCU W. Tennis Invite

DURHAM, N.C. — Taking part in the two-day North Carolina Central Women's Tennis Invitational, Thursday and Friday, Davidson took home three titles combined in singles and doubles over the two days at the NCCU Tennis Courts.
The freshmen trio Emma Heiderscheit, Franny Shea and Josie Schaffer had great success in singles during the two day event. Heiderscheit won the Gray flight, first taking a 6-4, 6-1 win over a Campbell player before scoring a 6-3, 7-5 victory in the semifinals vs. UNC Wilmington. She sealed up the singles title in three sets, downing Hanna Axelsson of ECU, 6-3, 0-6, 7-5.
Shea and Schaffer each won the Eagle flight, making the finals and then earning exhibition wins as well. Shea won a pair of hard-fought three-set matches, taking a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 decision vs. Victoria Dixon of ECU and then coming from a set down, 4-6, to earn back-to-back 6-4 victories against Campbell's Ciara O'Toole. The first year player then won a 6-1, 7-5 exhibition win vs. Sofia Miller of NCCU.
Schaffer opened her singles play with a straight-set 6-3, 6-2 win against her opponent from UNCW. She then downed Huda McGraw of ECU by the count of 6-2, 6-2 before closing out with a 6-3, 6-3 win vs. Sarah Horn of UNCW in an exhibition match.
Also competing in singles action was Mira Gladstone (Maroon flight) and Nicole Krykanov (Gray flight). Gladstone fell in her first match, 6-2, 6-1, but came back to pick up a 6-2, 6-1 consolation match win vs. Anna Daniels of UNCW.
Krykanov scored a 6-0, 6-7(4), 6-1 win in her first singles match vs. a North Carolina A&T player, but then lost to Axelsson, 6-1, 6-1 in the next round. She capped off her singles with a 7-5, 6-2 consolation win against Marlene Estenssoro of N.C. A&T.
In doubles play, Krykanov and Schaffer won the Maroon flight with three straight wins. The duo scored a 7-5 decision vs. a pair from Campbell, then rolled to wins of 6-1 and 6-1 against teams from East Carolina and UNCW.
The pair of Gladstone and Heiderscheit lost their first match in the Gray flight, 6-3, but came back to get a 6-0 win on the consolation side against a team from N.C. A&T.
Davidson's busy week continues as it competes at the ITA Women's Carolina Regionals, Oct. 25-27.
