GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Davidson women's tennis team got their 2020 season underway Monday morning, falling 7-0 to former Southern Conference foe Furman at the Mickel Tennis Center.
The Wildcats (0-1) were opening on the road for the third straight season and facing the Paladins (1-2) for the 39th time since 1978. Both teams last met in 2016.
Furman opened the match by taking two of the three doubles slots, No. 2 (6-3) and No. 3 (6-1), for the first team point and then took all six singles positions for the win.
"I was extremely pleased and impressed with our team today," said third-year head coach Susanne Depka. "Furman is a very talented and tough team! We competed so well and had great mindsets throughout the entire match. We were close in several matches and definitely improved in many areas today. I know the experiences from today will carry over in the matches this upcoming weekend."
Senior Samantha Armas and freshman Josie Schaffer had the best showing in singles on the morning. Armas went to three sets, winning the first one, 6-4, before the Paladins' MaryAnn Rompf rattled off 6-1 and 6-3 decisions in the next two sets for the win at No. 3.
Starting the year nationally ranked at No. 114, the freshman Schaffer nearly got her first collegiate win. She came back from falling in the first set, 7-5, to pick up a 6-3 win in the second set to force the final set. It was a back-and-forth set before Maggie Pate of Furman prevailed 10-8 at No. 6.
Also making her collegiate debut was Emma Heiderscheit at No. 5 singles where she fell 6-2, 6-2.
Davidson returns home this weekend for a pair of matches, Jan. 25-26, against East Tennessee State (10:30 a.m.) and Queens of Charlotte (1 p.m.) inside the Knobloch Tennis Center.
