It's World Series time again, and that means it's also time for Davidson's Wildcat World Series at Wilson Field.
The Wildcats' annual best-of-three intrasquad series will begin Friday at 4:30 p.m. Game 2 is set for 11 a.m. Saturday with Game 3 to immediately follow (regardless of results).
Assistant coach Ryan Munger is coaching the Red team, while volunteer assistant Kyle Lindquist is leading the Black team.
"I'm really excited about the Red team roster," said Munger. "We have a couple of our top returning arms starting for us, in sophomore Alex Fenton and junior Pete Bloomberg. Offensively, we think we should be really strong behind the A-10 home run champ, Ruben Fontes (14 HRs), with sophomore outfielder Parker Nolan, who has arguably been our top player this fall, setting the table for him."
The Red will also feature freshman catcher Garrett Browder, one of the top hitters in the fall, and Munger said infielders Alex Fedje-Johnson and Jacob Hinderleider will anchor the defense.
The Black, captained by senior infielder Brett Centracchio, will rely on senior second baseman Matt Frey, who had a 41-game reached-base streak last spring and will lead off. Lindquist said senior outfielder Greg Lowe has "had a tremendous fall" and will play center and bat second. Sophomore Matt Gravely, who has shown progress as well, will play short. And the Black will look to freshman right-hander Jacob Peaden to start the opener.
Lindquist is excited to see the competitive juices flowing this weekend.
"Fall is typically very developmentally-focused, which tends to be very individual-based," he said. "This provides a nice opportunity to bring guys together, as a team, and pull for one another and fight for that common goal."
