CARY, N.C. — Eight Davidson men's tennis players took part in the ITA Carolina Regional Championships over the weekend of Oct. 18-20 at the Cary Tennis Park. Two Wildcats advanced to the second round in the singles draw.
The pair of Yash Parikh and Sam Kavarana each won their first round singles matches to open the weekend. The junior Parikh claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win over Dino Bonetta of Elon before then falling in his second-round match against ninth-seeded Tadas Babelis of N.C. State. He won the first set, 6-1, but Babelis charged back to score wins of 6-2 and 6-3 in the next two sets for the match win.
Kavarana came from a set down to net a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over N.C. State's Joseph Schrader in the first round. He again went to a another three-set match, only to fall this time after winning the first set in a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 decision to Agustin Tamagnone of East Carolina.
William Clark and Axel Fries each had tough first round setbacks, falling 6-4, 6-3 and 7-5, 6-4 to players from Furman and Wake Forest, who was seeded 16th. Both players also fell in their consolation matches, 7-5, 6-4 and 6-1, 6-3, respectively, against foes from ECU and UNC Wilmington.
Thomas Mason went to three sets against Samuel Rubell of Duke before falling 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, and then came up short in a consolation match, 6-3, 6-4, against Ladd Harrison of North Carolina.
Rounding out the singles players for the 'Cats was Brooks Green, who faced Milo Bargeron of Appalachian State and fell 7-6(2), 6-4 before dropping a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Johnny Wang of College of Charleston in a consolation match.
Davidson had two doubles teams compete over the weekend. Matthew Rose and Parikh teamed up and lost a very close 8-6 decision to a pair from Clemson. They did not play their consolation match as the doubles team from Coastal Carolina withdrew.
The other doubles team of Fries and Alexander Loope fell 8-4 to a duo from N.C. State, which was seeded 9-16, and then fell 8-5 against UNC Wilmington in their consolation match.
Davidson takes some time off before playing in their final Fall event at the Wake Forest Invitational, Nov. 8-10.
