DAVIDSON, N.C. — For the 13th straight year, the Davidson men's tennis team will host its own invitational as they prepare to take part in their second Fall event this weekend with the Davidson Invitational, Oct. 5-6, on the hard courts of the Davidson Tennis Courts.
Joining the Wildcats at the invitational this weekend will be USC-Upstate, Queens from just down the road in Charlotte and Southern Methodist. The invitational is a points system, with points being determined based on position. The No. 1 singles position is worth 16 points and going two points down at each position to No. 8, which is worth two points. The top doubles spot is worth eight points, then going down to No. 4, which is worth two.
"The guys are looking forward to being home this weekend and playing in our own tournament," said head coach Drew Barrett, who is entering his 14th season and has collected 138 wins while at Davidson. "This weekend we are continuing to get our legs under us and working on our games as it's just our second Fall event this year. It will be a good weekend with some good competition as we are looking to get a lot of matches in over the two days. I know the guys are excited and looking forward to showing what they can do on our home courts."
Play begins Saturday, Oct. 5, at 10 a.m. and finises up on Sunday, with play starting at 10 a.m. as well. The invite itself will be a flighted individual format with eight singles flights and four doubles flights.
Davidson's Fall season this year has it playing in five tournaments, having opened at the Queens Invitational, Sept. 14-15. After this weekend, the Wildcats will travel down to Greensboro, N.C., for a two-day tournament, Oct. 12-13, on the campus of UNCG. Following the UNCG Invite, they will be the USTA/ITA Regional Championship in Cary, N.C., Oct. 18-21. The final Fall event has Davidson traveling to Winston-Salem, N.C., to take part in the Wake Forest Invite, Nov. 8-10.
Returning from last season is eight letterwinners, with four starters part of the returners. Leading the way is 2017 Atlantic 10 Freshman of the Year and three-time all-conference pick Axel Fries, who has won 40 singles matches and another 34 doubles matches during his three years. Starter Yash Parikh is coming off a career-best 13-6 season in singles play, earning him A-10 All-Second Team. The sophomore duo of Sam Kavarana (team-best 14-4) and Brooks Green (12-7) are both coming off stellar debut seasons a year ago, with Kavarana earning a spot on the league's all-second team.
The Wildcats concluded another successful campaign year with a 13-9 overall record, giving them 68 combined wins the last five seasons with a pair of 16-win campaigns during that stretch. They have made back-to-back appearances in the semifinals of the A-10 Championship.
