ROCK HILL, S.C. – Jamie DiLuzio's second career goal, a 92nd minute penalty kick, lifted Davidson over Winthrop, 2-1 (2ot), in non-conference men's soccer action Saturday evening on Eagle Field.

With their second straight victory, the Wildcats move to 4-3-0 on the season ahead of their Tuesday night battle against No. 1 Wake Forest in Winston-Salem.

The loss drops the Eagles to 1-4-0 overall.

Davidson, which held a 6-0 advantage in shots at intermission, finished with a 10-8 edge, while the two teams combined for just seven on frame.

Coming off a goal and assist performance in the Wildcats' 3-1 triumph over UNC Asheville Tuesday, Jaylen Thompson gave his club a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute. A Malcolm McCabe cross set up the junior's strike.

The Eagles' lone goal came from the foot of Jordan Walshaw, who scored his fourth of the season off a penalty kick, 15:51 into the second half.

Sawyer Gaffney came up big in goal for Davidson stopping a game-high three shots.

Postgame Comments from Head Coach Matt Spear

We started five freshmen tonight, and they handled it well, including Jack Wilson in his first extended play.

Our depth was tested on a muggy night and a physical Winthrop team that made it tough on us.

Malcolm McCabe made some good bursting runs forward and delivered the cross on Jaylen's goal. And for the first time I saw a goal scorer celebrate by jumping over the corner flag!

The game changed on the PK call against us - it was a head scratching call. And it fed more fight in to Winthrop.

Sawyer Gaffney made a couple key point blank saves to push us on.

Charlie Caswell created the goal by bringing down a difficult pass in stride, skinning one defender then getting fouled by the second. And of course we are really happy for Jamie DiLuzio to convert the golden goal PK.

The guys know we
weren't our best overall tonight, but it's a good sign to grind out the win regardless.
